What’s the most unusual car you could buy for £7,000?
The most common reason for taking out a RateSetter loan is to buy a car. In fact, car purchases account for nearly 1 in 5 RateSetter loans, and the average amount borrowed for a car purchase is £6,736.
That made us think: £6,736 is plenty to buy a sensible family car or a nice commuter, but what if you wanted something a bit more adventurous? If you had that much to spend, what’s the most unusual car you could buy? We had a look through Auto Trader’s listings, and here are the five of the best:

1984 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur 6.8l (£4,995)
You’d be surprised at how cheap some of the older Rolls Royces go for. We found a 1984 Silver Spur in dark grey with nearly a year left on its MOT, along with wood trim and leather seats. Chauffeur not included, but perhaps you could hire one for a couple of weeks with the £1,741 you’d have left over.
If Rolls Royces aren’t your thing, you could also go for a Bentley, although the velour trim hasn’t aged quite as well as the Rolls’ leather.
2007 Alfa Romeo Spider 2.2 JTS (£6,000)
An Italian convertible for just £6,000: it might be better suited to driving past vineyards in Tuscany, but if you’re optimistic about the weather this summer then this Alfa Romeo Spider is a steal.
1989 Land Rover Defender 90 (£3,995)
Part car, part tractor, this Land Rover Defender is a proper off-roader. Made in Britain and built like a tank, it’s perfect for trundling down country lanes and dirt tracks, and should withstand anything you can throw at it.
1974 Triumph Spitfire (£4,000)
An authentic British classic: the Triumph Spitfire is one of the best-loved cars to of the 70s, and despite an engine providing just 76hp, the car’s small size makes it a joy to drive. Best of all, because some models (including this one) are more than 40 years old, they’re officially classed as classic cars and are exempt from vehicle tax.
Bonus: 1988 Chevrolet Corvette 5.7l (£6,750)
We’ve gone £14 over budget here, but bear with us – a classic American muscle car with everything that entails: a V8 engine, a 4 speed automatic gear box and, unfortunately, left hand drive. Still, this Corvette is an incredible car for the money, especially given that it’s only done 50,000 miles.
